8 things to do when you visit the Gold Coast

One of the hardest things to do when you go on holiday is choosing what to do in the short amount of time you have. We’ve selected a few of our favourite things to do on the southern end of the Gold Coast that you might like to add to your itinerary.

Go Stand up Paddleboarding at Currumbin

While the beaches on the Gold Coast are arguably some of the best in the world, sometimes you need to get out of the surf. Currumbin Creek is about a 10 minute drive from the Bend of the River property and is a popular place for Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUPing). If you’ve never been SUPing before, you are missing out! It is very relaxing and is great exercise for the core. There are plenty of places to hire boards by the hour, or for the whole day.

Walk through the Burleigh Head National Park

Located in the Burleigh National Park is a number of beautiful walking tracks. The Coastal track which begins on Ikkina Road, just off the Gold Coast Highway near the mouth of Tallebudgera Creek is a gorgeous walk that takes you up around the edge of the cliffs, overlooking the ocean. During whale watching season (Late June-October), you might even see a whale or two! Burleigh Head National Park is only a 10 minute drive from the Bend of the River property.

Visit the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Ten minutes drive from the Bend of the River property you’ll find the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. The Sanctuary was established by the National Trust of Australia and is dedicated to conserving Australia’s natural heritage and Indigenous culture. They have a tonne of native animals on display and there is a free lorikeet feeding session each day at 8am.

Make a day trip to Byron Bay

Byron Bay, renowned for its beaches, festivals and hippy vibe is a location you must visit at some point in your life. If you are staying on the southern end of the Gold Coast, Byron is about an hour’s drive south making it a perfect destination for a day trip. Take a walk up to the famous lighthouse, go for a swim at one of their many pristine beaches, or enjoy lunch at an organic cafe.

Go shopping on James Street

Shop-a-holics, this is the place for you! James Street is located in the heart of Burleigh and is lined with more boutique stores than you can poke a stick at! After a hard day of shopping, you can sit down and enjoy dinner at Justine Lane, or one of the many other restaurants the next street over. If you make it down on a Thursday afternoon, there is also a free “juggle jam” in the park on the foreshore where you can release your inner child. James Street is just ten minutes from Bend of the River.

See the Glow Worm Caves at Springbrook

If you have never experienced the magic of glow worms, you absolutely must visit the glow worm cave at Springbrook National Park. 45 minutes inland from our property, in the heart of the Hinterland you’ll find bushwalks, waterfalls and stunning photography sites to enjoy during the day. After sun down, a 10 minute walk will bring you into a cave (with a waterfall flowing through the middle) filled with millions of tiny glowing worms. It is something that can only be described as magical!

Go whale watching at Point Danger

Twenty minutes drive south, on the New South Wales border, you will find Point Danger. Standing on the cliffs, overlooking the ocean, it is highly likely that visitors during whale season (June-October) will see one or two whales and perhaps even a newborn calf! Before you head home, make sure you take a photo with one foot on each side of the border.

Enjoy your unique Gold Coast accommodation

There are over 14 acres of organic orchards to enjoy, so before you do anything else, make sure you make the most of it! If you need some help relaxing, we can organise an on-site massage, or you can select a book from our extensive library to enjoy on the verandah.
There are so many things to do on the Gold Coast less than an hour from the Bend of the River accommodation and when you get back from a busy day experiencing the surrounds, your private homestead will be there for you to relax and soak up the beautiful sights and sounds of the property.
